A lodge at the forest edge

Twenty-two rooms and a twenty-five metre pool, with a small casino in the pavilion at the end of the terrace.

The lodge

Built in 1998, and set back from the trees

The site was cleared to twenty metres from the forest edge and stopped there, so every room on that side looks into green and not at a lawn. The building is single storey apart from four rooms, and the roofs reach out far enough that a door can stay open in the rain.

That makes twenty-two rooms, a dining room open on three sides, a pool on the terrace and, at the far end of it, the casino pavilion.

The park gate is seventeen kilometres east, and the first bus leaves at seven. The town lies four kilometres in the other direction. Most guests come for the falls and stay three nights, and by the third day they've usually stopped going anywhere.

It isn't grand. The forest starts where the terrace ends, and somebody is awake at the desk at any hour.

The terrace

A twenty-five metre pool, unheated

It's twenty-five metres because somebody in 1998 wanted to swim lengths, and nobody has regretted it. The pool is open from six in the morning until ten at night. It isn't heated, so at seven on a July morning it's decidedly cold.

The loungers along the north side fall into shade from two in the afternoon, and that's about when people start using them.

The pavilion

A casino at the end of the pool terrace

The pavilion is part of this hotel. It sits at the end of the terrace under the same roofline, and the casino inside is run by the hotel itself. There are nine tables and a bar, open five evenings a week.

From reception it's about ninety paces under cover, past the dining room and along the pool. The age in Misiones is 18, and a document is checked at the door on every visit.
